Yields: 6-8 naans
Prep time: 30 minutes
Cook time: 5-7 minutes per naan
Ingredients:
* 2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
* 1/2 teaspoon sugar
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
* 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
* 2 tablespoons melted butter or ghee
* Melted butter or ghee for brushing
* Fresh cilantro or parsley (optional) for garnish
Instructions:
* Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, whisk together warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
* Make Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder. Add the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, and melted butter. Mix well until a dough forms.
* Knead: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
* Rest: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
* Shape: Punch down the dough and divide it into 6-8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball.
* Roll: On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin oval shape, about 6-8 inches in diameter.
* Cook: Heat a tawa or skillet over medium heat. Place a naan on the hot tawa and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until slightly puffed and lightly browned.
* Flip and Cook: Flip the naan and cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown on the other side.
* Brush and Serve: Brush the cooked naan with melted butter or ghee. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro or parsley, if desired. Serve immediately with your favorite curry or dal.
Tips:
* For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of garlic powder or minced garlic to the dough.
* If you don't have a tawa, you can use a cast iron skillet or a griddle.
* To make stuffed naan, add chopped vegetables or cheese to the dough before rolling.
