---

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)

3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup sour cream (or plain yogurt)

1 1/2 cups peeled and chopped apples (about 2 medium apples)

For the Topping:

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

---

Instructions:

1. Preheat the Oven:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round or square cake pan.

2. Prepare the Dry Ingredients:

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.

3. Make the Cake Batter:

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. This should take about 2-3 minutes with an electric mixer.

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Add the dry ingredients in 2 parts, alternating with the sour cream. Start and finish with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Gently fold in the chopped apples until evenly distributed.

4. Pour and Level:

Pour the cake batter into the prepared cake pan and level the top with a spatula.

5. Make the Topping:

In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and cinnamon for the topping. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the cake batter.

6. Bake:

Bake the cake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, and the top is golden brown. If the top is browning too quickly, you can cover the cake loosely with aluminum foil.

7. Cool and Serve:

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and serve!
