Maid Rites

Maid-Rites are a classic American sandwich, often referred to as loose meat sandwiches. Originating in Iowa, they feature seasoned ground beef served on a bun, similar to a sloppy joe but without the tomato-based sauce. They are simple yet flavorful, making them a great choice for an easy and satisfying meal. Here’s how you can make Maid-Rites at home:

Ingredients:

1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter option)

1 small onion, finely chopped

1/4 cup beef broth (or water for a lighter version)

1 tbsp mustard

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp ketchup (optional, for a hint of sweetness)

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp onion powder

1-2 tbsp vinegar (apple cider or white vinegar)

Hamburger buns (or sandwich buns)

Optional toppings: pickles, mustard, cheese, onions, or ketchup

Instructions:

1. Cook the Ground Beef:

In a large skillet, heat the ground beef over medium-high heat. Cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it’s browned and cooked through (about 7-8 minutes). Drain any excess grease.

2. Add the Seasonings:

Add the chopped onion to the beef and cook for another 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant.

Stir in the beef broth, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup (if using), salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well.

Lower the heat and let it simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid is absorbed and the beef mixture becomes moist and flavorful.

3. Add Vinegar:

Stir in the vinegar for an extra tang. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed by adding more salt, pepper, or vinegar to your liking.

4. Assemble the Maid-Rites:

Toast the buns lightly if desired. Spoon the meat mixture onto the buns and serve hot.

5. Serve:

Top with optional toppings like pickles, additional mustard, onions, or cheese. Serve with chips, fries, or a salad on the side.

Tips:

Customize the Flavor: Feel free to adjust the seasonings to suit your taste. Some people like to add a little sugar for a sweet kick, while others might prefer more tang with extra vinegar.

Make Ahead: You can make the meat mixture in advance and refrigerate it for a few days, or even freeze it for later use.

Add Cheese: For an extra indulgent Maid-Rite, top it with a slice of cheese (American, cheddar, or Swiss work well).

Maid-Rites are perfect for casual gatherings, game days, or a quick

and satisfying weeknight meal. Enjoy this comforting and flavorful sandwich!
